August 16, 2008 (9am-12pm) - Dick Watt

"Something Old, Something New.  Hey, I like it!  How about you?"
This workshop will be based on the philosophy, pedagogy and activities of Grace C. Nash, founder of the AZ Orff Chapter, who has graciously given Dick her consent to use them.  The title is a paraphrase of one of her activities.

Grace was honored in November of 1989 by AOSA as the first recipient of its Distinguished Service Award. The insights she expressed on that occasion are every bit as pertinent today.

October 25, 2008 - Doug Goodkin

Turning the innovative Orff approach towards the specific repertoire of American jazz, we will play, sing, dance and improvise our way to a basic understanding of the aesthetics, musical theory, techniques and cultural background that make jazz jazz.  This workshop will help participants understand more of our own cultural heritage and how to pass it on to our students.  All material will be directly applicable to children from preschool through middle school.  Those who play band instruments should bring them to the workshop (no previous jazz experience necessary).

February 21, 2009 - Matt McCoy

"Making Music the Elemental Way"
Come bring your energy and enthusiasm as we join together in music making and movement through the wonderful process of Orff Schulwerk.  Kid-tested lessons will be presented that are both practical and appropriate for diverse classroom situations and ages.  Strategies for incorporating movement, speech, singing, and instrumental playing will be included throughout the day with opportunities for improvisation and composition.

April 18, 2009 - David Adee

"Say Yes!  The Power of Improvisation"
Come along as we journey beyond San Jose with the Art of Play!  Learn strategies for teaching improvisation in theater, voice, percussion, xylophones, recorders and movement.  Nurture your own playful spirit while learning how to facilitate student improvisation.   Explore a path towards greater presence and fulfillment in the music classroom.  Especially useful for teachers who are new to teaching improvisation and looking for ways to jump-start the process.
